Your tax dollars ladies and gentlemen.
A panel consisting of ABF Secretary Michael Pezzullo, Acting Commissioner Michael Outram and Liberal Senator Michaelia Cash completely failed to explain what Airsoft was at a Senate Estimates Hearing when prompted by Senator David Leyonhjelm.
Are we really surprised at this point?
Now to be fair, being across an entire knowledge base of any organisation and it’s relevant legislation is difficult for any one individual, however, among 3 ABF representatives and a Senator none of them had the slightest idea of what Airsoft was and had to resort to Google. On the other side of the coin, basic knowledge of said subject from you know, those who enforce the Customs Act for a living, would be expected. But alas, we were proven wrong.
Interestingly enough, Michael Pezzullo was the same guy who was on the receiving end of similar stupidity during a Senate Inquiry back in 2013 at the infamous Senator Sea Patrol incident:
It seems Mr Pezzullo has come full circle.
All of the aforementioned pales into insignificance when the claim was later made, as was previously by the Attorney General’s Department, that Airsoft is potentially lethal:
Yes, you heard that correctly. There are no words.
This entire incident just further highlights how ludicrous Australia’s ban on Airsoft is and much like the bureaucrats at the Senate Estimates hearing, it’s an international embarrassment.
Here’s hoping the Liberal Democrats’, led by Aaron Stonehouse’s latest Airsoft campaign, can turn the ship in WA.
