De ja vu.
One week removed from criminal Rick Maddison acquiring what appeared to be a full automatic firearm and killing a Queensland Policeman, a criminal in Melbourne has done similar.
Yacqub Khayre, a Somali refugee turned hardened criminal, acquired an illegal firearm (alleged to have been a sawn-off shotgun) and engaged in a shootout with Police after killing one person and taking another hostage. Yacqub had a charge sheet the length of the Yarra River, the latest being a conviction for armed robbery during a violent home invasion, of which he was out on parole for just six months before the Brighton incident.
Khayre was also acquitted of his role in a plot to commit a suicide attack on Holsworthy Barracks in 2009.
Malcolm Turnbull asked why Khayre was out on parole? The answer: Because it’s Victoria and it’s stellar justice system. This is the latest major incident in a string of law and order embarrassments for Daniel Andrews’ government and just a few months removed from the horrific Bourke Street attack.
More to the point, Khayre was able to illegally acquire a shotgun, illegally shorten it and kill a Chinese National with it, while taking a hostage and shooting three Police before being shot and killed. IS have claimed responsibility for the attack but that claim has not been verified to date. Claim notwithstanding, the incident has been treated as terrorism.
It also came out in the wash that ASIO and the AFP failed to share information with the Victorian Parole Board about Khayre. This is right after ASIO chief Duncan Lewis said there was “no relationship” between refugees and terrorism.
The first question that sprung to mind was: was it an Adler? No, it wasn’t.
So to sum up, a refugee turned criminal on parole and on a watch list acquires an illegal firearm, illegally shortens it, takes hostages, commits murder and then dies in a shootout with Police. Where have we seen this exact same scenario before? Oh yeh, that Lindt Café thing.
Again, no statement from David Shoebridge, Rebecca Peters, Gun Control Australia or Justice Minister Michael Keenan on this incident, or about the drive by shooting in Kensington on Friday.
Later, the man who was alleged to have dealt him the firearm, 30 year old Rory Dalrymple, was charged after a series of raids by Victoria Police. Both Channel 7 and the Age said that you could apparently be both a prohibited person and a firearms dealer in the first place. What does this have to deal with licensed firearms dealers? Absolutely nothing. This was a deliberate attempt by the mainstream media to deflect yet another systemic failure of our “tough gun laws” onto legitimate firearms dealers.
Victoria Police announced they were putting together a special illegal firearm investigation team. While this is a step in the right direction, there seems to be bigger issues in play when criminals have been eavesdropping on Police firearm safe inspections, Licensing and Regulation Division is already under investigation (perhaps a trojan horse to move it into the hands of the notoriously anti-gun Department of Justice) and the Victorian Government has been leaking the details of firearm owners.
And then there’s the illegal imports flowing through Melbourne Ports, but nah, too hard.
Furthermore, the Combined Firearms Council of Victoria are also currently taking Victoria Police to VCAT over their secrecy regarding the impending Firearms Act Review.
One feels that at the current rate of these incidents, it’s only a matter of time before a major incident hits Australian shores. And none of the Tough Gun Laws© rhetoric will be able to prevent it.
What will the “Muh Port Arthur” shriekers say then? One hopes we won’t have to ever hear it. One thing is for certain though, civilian disarmament does nothing but make victims out of the law abiding and the Australian “example” continues to show exactly that.
Heaven forbid one of those stolen M72LAW’s shows up at the next one.
